Before the surgery, our plastic surgeon calls you for a consultation. During this meeting, the surgeon will assess your facial structure, discuss your goals, and determine the most suitable type and size of implants.
The surgeon will make incisions under general anaesthesia in strategic locations to minimize scarring. Incisions for cheek implants are often made inside the mouth, while chin and jaw implants may require incisions either under the chin or inside the mouth. The selected implants are secured inside a pocket, which is closed with stitches. The surgeon will ensure symmetry and the desired outcome before closing the incisions.

Surgery
The operations are usually performed under local anaesthesia with sedation. However, some patients and surgeons may prefer the use of general anaesthesia. There are many possible incisions that may be utilised to place facial implants, often dictated by any other surgical procedures that may be being performed at the same time. Your surgeon will discuss this with you at consultation.
Later Progress
As with all surgery, you must expect to feel bruised and sore. Most surgeons apply a bandage to the face for two days to reduce swelling. Stitches are removed after one week. You may also be asked to keep your head elevated for a few days to help the swelling go down. Initially, your face may feel puffy and somewhat stiff. After your surgery and recovery you should expect a more youthful looking face with more defined features and the impression of better bone structure.

Immediate Postoperative Period
- Hospital Stay
Facial implant surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. However, an overnight stay may be recommended in some cases or if combined with other surgeries.
- Pain Management
Mild to moderate discomfort is common after surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to manage any pain or discomfort. Take these medications as directed and avoid overexertion.
- Swelling and Bruising
Swelling and bruising are expected after the surgery. Applying cold compresses to the affected areas can help lessen discomfort. Sleeping with your head elevated can also minimize swelling.
Ongoing Care
Take it easy during the first week after surgery. Avoid strenuous activities, and get plenty of rest to allow your body to heal. Stick to a soft and bland diet during the initial days to avoid putting stress on your facial muscles. Stay hydrated and avoid foods that require excessive chewing.
You will likely have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon within the first week. During this visit, they will assess your healing progress, remove any stitches, and provide further instructions for the upcoming weeks.
After two to four weeks, gradually reintroduce light exercises. Protect your skin from the sun by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. This helps prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and ensures the longevity of your results. If your incisions were made inside the mouth or in inconspicuous areas, scarring may be minimal. Follow your surgeon’s recommendations for scar care, which may include using scar-reducing ointments.

We recommend that people take a week off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical). Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for about 6 weeks after your surgery. Post-surgical bruising may take a few weeks to disperse; this should be considered when planning time off work.
